No apology necessary, Dru. We quite enjoyed your vinegary company. Vinegar is, of course, a very useful substance. It's used mightily in preservation. I thought the phrase was "piss and vinegar", but "hope and vinegar" works too. We must remember however that hope is not a strategy. She still stands, if empty. Perhaps a new administration will see fit to fill her with people (county workers) and tear down that abomination we know as the current County Administration Building. The MedMart will need a parking highrise, and the one that brings in the bucks at 9th and Prospect could be filled instead with county worker's cars while shifting the onus of "visitor" parking to Ontario and Lakeside. That and the other guvmint office parkers when Fitzgerald does indeed take Ellison's advice and substitutes the courthouse's lake view parking garage with a beer garden. In this instance, we have no strategy and can only hope. I suspect that sugar would be the better preservative in this scenario. That is unless Fitz is a pickle man. I don't know him well enough.

Well written. As my fiancee and I have been searching for a place to call home - our first home mind you - we have been surprised at the hesitancy to move closer to the city. Having both grown up in outer-ring suburbs of Cleveland, we've recognized the value in having a true neighborhood rather than a subdivision and a community in the true sense of the word. That coupled with an education in architecture and urban design has led us to turn against the tide of sprawl. But even with all of the literature and talk of sustainable urbanism, green development, livable communities, etc., etc. it still is a seemingly uphill battle. Just this morning I was thinking to myself, "do I know something no one else does?" Why is everyone I know so shocked that I want to live where I don't need a car, or where I know my neighbors or where there is diversity.

I've realized that our American culture has warped our values - there's logic to how this happened, nothing we don't all know - great depression, post-war america, urban renewal efforts, etc. What I find more perplexing is what will happen to shift this mentality away from sprawl?

But most importantly...when?

I'd just like to let everyone know that the NOACA governing board is not expected to make any decision on the Innerbelt bridge at the December 11th meeting. The ODOT presentation will be a project status report for information only. There will be no resolution before the board regarding the Innerbelt bridge.

I understand your pain, that there is a severe lack of cycling amenities downtown. The racks shown in this illustration are to facilitate the lookout as a place for respite. Also seen in the rendering are some information boards and benches meaning that this place is to be used as a place of rest and gathering, much like on the Detroit Shoreway Bridge which I have seen used now and again.

I suppose the proliferation of bike racks is somewhat similar to the scattering of benches in Detroit Shoreway neighborhood. You would rather have too many that could be used than too few that negate any opportunity.

It may make sense to locate some spots that you feel are in dire need of racks downtown and contact Cleveland Bikes and Downtown Cleveland Alliance as a way to see what can be done to resolve that issue. I know many are looking forward to the "bike station" coming to the Gateway Neighborhood, however you are completely correct in pointing out the importance of places that allow for secure bicycle parking all around the city, from a visitor/commuter/commercial point of view. Your contribution could be the final linchpin needed to change someone's mind to cycle downtown instead of driving.

is there a surplus of bike racks in the world that we need to find places to store them? why would we continue to put racks in the middle of a bridge? is someone going to ride to the middle and decide that a bicycle is too efficient and walk the rest of the way to work. you can almost see the useless ones on the DS bridge in this image, and there are so few to be found downtown

thanks for posting this! i've long beent thinking how NEOhio could turn itself into a network of smart-growth cities of varying scales - obviously the ideal may be not be able to be achieved...but it would be interested to see what would happen if the leaders in this region started thinking at a broader scale
