CLOG call for submissions: MIAMI

One of my favorite architecture journals (potentially my favorite) has announced their new call for submissions which strikes a particular chord for those of us from Cleveland.

Miami.

Yes the home of CSI, Dexter, Vice and some basketball player who finally won a championship (without an asterisk) is the topic for CLOG's finely curated study.

Even as Miami stirs the architectural soul a bit as OMA and BIG battle royale for the rights to recreate the Miami Beach Convention Center in their own illustrious images (or at least in contextual interpretations) CLOG attempts to crash the party properly, shining a spotlight before the dawn (and eventual scattering) discovers the image of a new[er] city.

CLOG Announces Call for Submissions for CLOG : MIAMI
Photo © Andrew Kenney

If you're having trouble reading this, view it online here.
Submissions Due Aug 15
The largest city in the southeastern United States, Miami has long been subject to a range of unique forces—natural, political, and cultural—which have brought both booms and devastating busts. Despite setbacks, however, Miami has become a vibrant and broadly American city that mixes the historically Anglo-dominated North and the Latin South, vividly presenting many characteristics of today's United States: cosmopolitanism, an ever-shifting balance between public and private interests, economic volatility, and environmental tightrope walking.

When it comes to architecture, something is definitely happening in Miami. Not only is real estate and development booming, but recently, significant civic projects have demonstrated a potentially serious public/private commitment to infuse the commons with design and the arts, as seen in the Wynwood Art District and Art Basel Miami. Miami invented a strand of mid-century Modernism, epitomized the design aesthetic of the 1980s, hosted the major intellectual center of the New Urbanism movement, and is now providing opportunities to a new (and hungry) crop of international architects in projects like the Miami Beach Convention Center, Coconut Grove, the New World Center, One Thousand Museum Tower, 111 Lincoln Road, and more.

So like LeBron, it’s time for CLOG to take its talents to South Beach.

Submission info here.

Loren Naji Studio Gallery Call 4 Artists and New Exhibition Space

Knock Knock. “Who’s There?” Opportunities. “Opportunities Who?” Opportunities Knock! Loren Naji Studio Gallery makes a Call to Artists and Announces New Exhibition Space!

Member Loren Naji Studio Gallery | Neighborhood Ohio City
Issue Summer 2013 | Author Loren Naji

Loren Naji Studio Gallery offers a shotgun blast of news for the summer, including exhibition space expanding into another room, a planned expansion into another neighborhood, and plenty of opportunity for artists.
First, my familiar main gallery space has expanded into the adjacent, furniture-filled room, which has become “The Lounge Gallery.” Meanwhile, that original gallery will henceforth be called “The Parlor,” unless someone comes up with a better name!
But I have even bigger news. I have been awarded a property, along with two grants in order to create a new one -of -a -kind art venue in Collinwood. I have wild ideas and shows planned, and I even need a live- in curator—not to mention other curators and artists–to help bring these shows and adventures to fruition! Each of the twelve rooms in the new Collinwood venue will feature installations by individual artists. Indeed, every room and surface of the house will be used for exhibition, including the exterior.
In fact, the exterior of this house will literally become a gallery turned inside-out. Using weather resistant paint on panels and repurposed frames, artists will create work to be attached to the facade. This spectacle will allow onlookers to view art from the sidewalk and street! As paintings are sold, they will be replaced by new ones, creating an ever changing, mosaic-like exterior. This striking marvel will create intrigue and draw viewers to enter the space to discover the artist installations.
I need local artists to create works for the exterior, installation artists for the interior and one more special person to live rent free in one room of this gallery and act as gallerist, curator and co-director. Please call me at the gallery, 216.621.6644 for information.
Following are more opportunities associated with upcoming shows:
“Tall Walls, Unjuried, Uncensored” show, a co-production of CWAL and Loren Naji Studio Gallery, opening July 19, 2013. Anyone with art and a $25 dollar entrance fee can participate. Start creating controversial and even offensive art for this extravaganza!
My sister Jamilla Naji, a painter from Albuquerque, will curate a show depicting “the human condition,” with narrative vignettes, opening October 4. Contact my gallery for details.
Skulls, curated by Mary Urbas, opening November 1, 2013. Contact her or myself for inclusion possibilities.
Cleveland Kids Create, curated by my 10 year-old daughter, Brielle Naji, opening December 6, 2013. Featuring work by children between the ages of 5 and 13. Have your kids start creating a piece for this show! All work will be sold for $20.00, providing great holiday gifts and help to a charity for children!

CUDC launches COLD competition

CUDC launches new competition
COLD (Center for Outdoor Living Design)
COLDSCAPES: New Visions for Cold Weather Cities

"COLDSCAPES: New Visions for Cold Weather Cities" is a multi-disciplinary design competition intended to reveal the often overlooked potential of cold climate cities. COLDSCAPES invites artists, architects, landscape architects, and urban designers to submit conceptual and built projects, of various scales, which reveal exciting opportunities for revitalizing cold climate urban places. The competition is organized by Kent State University's Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC).

Intended Visions

COLDSCAPES aims to provoke a critical assessment of idealized representations from warmer seasons and challenge designers to engage more creatively with the unique conditions presented by winter. Submissions should explore new visions and emerging possibilities for enhancing livability in cold weather cities. We're interested in encouraging designers to inspire other designers to become cultural change agents, ultimately enabling cities to embrace their winter identities. Projects may fall within the domain of a particular discipline (architecture, public art, landscape architecture, urban design) or may cross over multiple disciplines. Entrants are encouraged to explore responses within a wide range of scales: city-scale urban form, mid-scale public spaces, or smaller street interventions. The competition does not specify a single site for submissions. Entrants may choose their own specific sites from around the world or submit proposed interventions that could be deployed in multiple geographic locations. The submission should provide an effective visual (and potentially aural, if using video) presentation of a built project or conceptual proposal that responds to critical design questions. What novel urban experiences can designers enable for winter city residents? How can the built environment become more responsive to changing outdoor conditions, enabling long-term resiliency? What visualization techniques can be employed to meaningfully communicate the ephemeral atmospheric qualities of winter environments? How can the urban environment respond to the needs of vulnerable populations in cold climates and increase opportunities for social inclusion?

Submission Format

In order to encourage a broad range of communication techniques, submissions may consist of still images or video. Various kinds of visualizations may be used, optimized for on-screen browsing, such as conceptual perspective renderings, explanatory diagrams, or photographs of built projects. A submission may include a maximum of three images or one video that clearly express the project's cold weather design intent. Each image must be in 16:9 aspect ratio (maximum size of 1024 x 768 pixels), in .jpg, .png, or .pdf format, with a maximum file size of 10 MB for each image. Video submissions must have a 16:9 aspect ratio and no more than 3 minutes in length. Videos must be submitted in .mov format and may be no larger than 100 MB. Submissions will be uploaded to the competition website as digital files. Mailed submissions will not be accepted. (A link to the full registration/submission page will be made available in mid-April 2013. See Competition Guidelines section below.) Creators of winning submissions and honorable mentions may be asked to submit higher resolution versions of their projects for inclusion in the online archive, physical exhibition, and print publication. Please do not include the entrant's name anywhere on the submission, since the submissions will be judged anonymously.

Text

In addition to images or video, entrants are required to submit text describing their projects. The text may be a maximum of 200 words and should focus on communicating the cold weather related design intentions of the submission.

Jury & Awards

A jury of artists and designers familiar with cold weather design issues will select three thought-provoking and visually compelling projects, each to receive a $1,000 award. A larger set of submissions will receive honorable mentions and comprise an online archive, providing an evolving, interactive resource for designers, residents, and public officials in winter weather communities. A final list of jurors will be announced before the registration deadline.

Exhibition & Publication

In addition to the online archive, a curated selection of entries will be included in a physical exhibition in Cleveland, Ohio, currently scheduled for November 2013. Winning entries will be published in Volume 6 of the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative’s Urban Infill journal series, focused on advancing the design of urban environments for winter weather.

Ownership

By entering the COLDSCAPES competition, entrants grant Kent State University's Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC) ownership of all prize-winning and honorable mention design submissions. Entrants acknowledge that the CUDC may exhibit all entries in an online archive, physical exhibition, and print publication. In entering the design competition, entrants grant the CUDC unrestricted license to exercise the entrants' rights regarding their design submissions, including, but not limited to, reproduction, preparation of derivative works, distribution of copies of the design submission, and the right to authorize such use by others.

CLOG - UnPublished call for submissions

One of my favorite journals has offered up another call for submissions which I think would be extremely perfect for so many folks and places around Cleveland. See below:

With relatively few outlets devoted to architectural criticism today and a professional tendency to declare a new architectural movement every ten years or so, a staggering amount of built work goes unexamined. How many times have we seen the same signature building reviewed? How many unknown projects must, by extension, never receive a critical appraisal?

CLOG : UNPUBLISHED will critically examine completed buildings that have thus far flown under the radar and/or have been forgotten. The submission process will be two-part.

Stage 1 (Due April 1, 2013)

Contributors are to submit 1-2 images of a building from any time period along with a two-sentence statement explaining why that particular building deserves a critical examination. Assessments may be positive, negative, or mixed. CLOG is not seeking portfolio projects or simply “favorite” buildings. The subject must have been built, and must not have been recently published in major publications, historical surveys, or blogs.

Examples of a potential subject include—but are certainly not limited to—a building that has never received a critical appraisal in the mainstream architectural press and/or historical surveys; a building that was critically appraised or once widely-studied soon after completion, but which has since been largely forgotten by architecture critics and historians; a building that has been examined and appraised in the past, but not for its architectural qualities (for example, a building that may have been widely studied by social historians but never given a critical architectural assessment).

Submission forms are available at www.clog-online.com/submissions and once completed should be emailed to submissions@clog-online.com accompanied by up to two 300 dpi images no less than 5.5” wide.

Stage 2

Those contributors that have been accepted in Stage 1 will be invited to submit a more in-depth critical assessment of the proposed building which can consist of a (up to) 500 word text and/or a graphic piece (to be due at a later date).

Big Ideas for a Small Space Call for Artists

Brought to you by LAND studio and Cleveland Public Library

About the Competition

Program DescriptionSee Also is an annual program of the Cleveland Public Library in partnership with LAND studio that invites artists, designers, and other creative professionals to create temporary public art projects in the library’s Eastman Reading Garden. The program commissions innovative, thought-provoking works of art that add to the library’s already broad range of educational and cultural programming. Each year, one artist or team of artists is selected to exhibit an artwork from May until October in this highly visible and beloved space. The Eastman Reading Garden is located in the heart of downtown Cleveland between the library’s historic Main Building and the newer Louis Stokes Wing of the Cleveland Public Library.

2013 Theme
Throughout Cleveland’s history, people have dreamed big, offering unique depictions of what a cityscape could contain. This ambitious visioning has produced a range of concepts, big and small, fantastic and far-fetched, that could redefine Cleveland’s landscape. From attaching ferris wheels to bridges to erecting a giant Superman across the Cuyahoga, Clevelanders have long conveyed fearlessness and creativity in their dreams.

For the 2013 See Also installation, we are asking artists to think BIG. In the spirit of thinking big for our city, Cleveland Public Library and LAND studio challenge artists to design thoughtful, wacky, novel or whimsical concepts for a jury of local stakeholders to consider for installation in the Eastman Reading Garden. Artists are encouraged to develop concepts that deal with the garden space specifically, or present ideas for sites throughout the city at the scale of the garden.

One or more artists will be selected to create an installation for the garden that showcases their big dreams for a small space.
