PechaKucha Cleveland Vol. 19 - 2013.08.23

I don't know why people use Facespace as their main site when they have a perfectally usable and navigable (sp, ugh) presence online with a  decent layout that is updated and doesn't require me LOGGING INTO FACESPACE to gather information.

As you can tell, this is a pet peeve of mine.

Anyway, via PechaKucha Cleveland actual website:

VENUE
@ Behind the West Side Market
W. 24th Street
Cleveland OH 44113
DETAILS
August 23, 2013
7:00am - 11:00am
FREE!
900 seats available

On Friday, August 23rd, 2013 PechaKucha Night Cleveland will be hosting its annual OUTDOOR event in Ohio City in the shadow of the one and only West Side Market!

Nestled between the parking lots that serve the West Side Market, PechaKucha will be taking over West 24th Street as an all-star list of presenters – many of which are from right there in Ohio City – take the stage to talk about their passion for their work. Our partners and friends from the West Side MarketOhio City Incorporated and Market Garden Brewery & Distillery are really the ones helping make this event possible and we can’t wait to fill Ohio City with creative thoughts, discussions and camaraderie!

The "doors" and the bars will open at 7:00pm as the music reverberates off the West Side Market as we await 8:30pm for the presentations to begin. As always, PechaKucha Night is a FREE event, though we certainly appreciate donations as they are the way we offset the costs for doing our summer series outdoor event.

Please reach out to friends and colleagues to let them know about PechaKucha Night Cleveland Volume 19th; this is going to be an evening block party you do NOT want to miss! Student Hip-Hop Showcase: Part Performance, Part Party

Progressive Arts Alliance Student Hip-Hop Showcase
Friday, August 9th, 2013
MOCA Cleveland
FREE
3pm

I have a special place in my heart for the Progressive Arts Alliance, a group who's mission is to engage young people and inspire them via arts learning ever since I was given the chance to be an artist/educator where I used architecture as a way to strengthen English, Math and Science curricula with middle students at George Washington Carver Middle School in Cleveland, Ohio. Perhaps one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had the good fortune to have and share with a fellow designer. It was a truly amazing process, made more so by the student's ingenuity, creativity and ability to freely question (there was a lack of embarrassment that I found held students back when I taught Architecture Design Studio at Kent State University. The students I met through PAA were quick to engage and to immerse themselves in the lesson, helping each other and constantly striving to solve rather complex problems conveniently coupled with working on unfamiliar software on unfamiliar computer platforms. Yet in only a few quick weeks the students truly blossomed into creating extremely provoking and personal work.

Anyway, enough about me.

more info via MOCA - CLE

Come celebrate the achievements of students from Progressive Arts Alliance's 12th annual RHAPSODY Hip-Hop Summer Arts Camp with a dynamic showcase of hip-hop music, dance, rhyme, and visual art.

A fun concert for the whole family, this outdoor celebration on Toby's Plaza will be part performance, part party. See how Progressive Arts Alliance is transforming arts education by using hip-hop's cultural art forms as a positive and productive form of creative self expression.

This party will be the culmination of this summer's Progressive Arts Alliance Student Hip-Hop Camp which took place in early July.

The Cleveland Flea - 2013.08.10

August Cleveland Flea (I know, I missed posting a few, I'M SORRY)

Vendors and stuff via Cleveland Flea

"No two Fleas are alike.
Because of our constant state of growth and the seemingly unlimited supply of artisans in the area, our network of moving parts produces a slightly different event every month.
This page is where you’ll find the most up-to-date listing of vendors for upcoming Fleas.
FOOD TRUCKS
Here are just a few of the amazing food trucks that have made an appearance at the Cleveland Flea so far.
Traveling from all over the Greater Cleveland area, they bring the vital sustenance (and the occasional, gluttonous treats) that keep our Flea-goers and Flea-vendors shopping and selling through last call.
VENDORS
At the August 10th event, you’ll find the following vendors, all of their amazing treasures, and so much more!

Digital Bookmobile: Lakewood, Ohio - 2013.08.09

I have a soft spot for alternative library outreach projects (especially after putting together Cleveland Public Library's BookBox with B.Watson and LANDstudio) and am intrigued by the DIGITALBookmobile, a converted 18 wheeler exhibit which becomes a virtual branch for the host library (or school's) digital library. While I personally am not sold that an ebook is better than a physical book (especially for us copious note-takers and dog-earers - which you should NOT DO in library books) out reach to our digitally enhanced and betrothed denizens is important. When we stop reading we are in some real trouble, let me tell you what.

What more could be offered? Big Truck! Books! Digitalz!

More 2013 National Tour dates for your learning pleasure.

Books, Check 'em OUT! (Remember that one? I hope it sticks in your head all day.)

Thanks to the MarJ for the heads up.

Cleveland Convention Center Hotel Open House - 2013.08.08

My understanding is that there wasn't a giant rush of developers hoping to leverage themselves into the new Convention Center Hotel Project, however Cooper Carry (who I hope that link is incorrect due to the absolute horribleness of the website) has apparently been named the "winner". Seriously, worst/slowest/most cumbersome architecture website ever. And I know bad website design. I've made a lot of 'em.

There is an open house this week to meet representatives from Cooper Carry where folks can come and, I suppose, say something for consideration, prior to the "design process" being begun, about the hotel project.

I dunno. Say something nice and useful. Architects like that.

It is about here where I say, "Holy sheet! Way to offer last minute notice for input at the most insane time slot ever for working folks who want to get involved. Couldn't we have hosted this at the freshwater crib on the second full moon of the third month of the year 1810?" I suppose some people can make it. If you can, good on you, the rest of us will be at work, working.

VibrantNEO Upcoming Open Houses - Summer 2013

via: VibrantNeo

Join us for the next round of Vibrant NEO Open Houses where we will look at Alternative Scenarios - different potential futures for Northeast Ohio - that could result from different choices.
The VibrantNEO process puts you in charge of Northeast Ohio’s future. What will our communities look like, how successful will our economy be, and how much will it likely cost us if we keep our current policies and approaches to land use, transportation and development in place? What would the alternative futures look like if they change?
We need your help to define what we value and what choice Northeast Ohioans want to make for our future. We can only answer these questions together!

Pick a date and location that’s most convenient for you and join us for a Vibrant NEO Open House where you can learn about and help choose among different possible futures for our region. The open house format will allow you to attend the meeting at your convenience. Burning River Fest-2013.0726-27

I will admit that I enjoy most brewery based festivals and this one is usually a pretty good time, especially if you enjoy environmental awareness raising.

via: The Burning River Fest 2013 internets site.

"Join us for Burning River Fest 2013 on July 26-27, 6-11pm.  Presale tickets are now available!
Since 2001, folks from all over the Great Lakes region have come together to remember the 1969 burning of the Cuyahoga River and celebrate the renewed sense of eco-consciousness the infamous fire sparked. Intended to raise awareness of environmental issues affecting the Great Lakes region and Cuyahoga River ecosystem, the annual Burning River Fest features educational exhibits from area environmental groups, fresh food from local farms and eateries, live music, and a special appearance by Great Lakes Brewing Company’s® Christmas Ale™!
Highlights from Burning River Fest 2012:
  • Over 25 bands and musicians on three stages bringing funk, blues, rock, and more to the shore
  • Local environmental groups featuring interactive and educational displays for all ages, including Baldwin Wallace University's Instrument Petting Zoo and Whole Foods Market's "Art On Wheels" recycled art booth
  • Fresh, all-natural local food and chef demonstrations, plus handcrafted beer by Great Lakes Brewing Company.
  • A Corporate Boat Float featuring boats made from post-consumer recyclable materials
  • The most spectacular nighttime views of Cleveland from a wonderful greenspace right in the heart of Cleveland’s industry
  • A ceremonial lighting of floating pyres intended to commemorate the efforts to clean up our waterways since the burning of the Cuyahoga.
Proceeds benefit the Burning River Foundation, a local non-profit organization that provides resources for the sustainable future of our waterways, which has donated over $320,000 to date.

GOOD CHEER. GOOD CAUSE. GOOD BEER."

How does that not sound spectacular? Also I love how they are lighting up the Historic Coast Guard Station (second from the left).

Cleveland discusses the Death Penalty - Charles Club (2013.07.24) + Cleveland Salon (2013.07.29)

Via: Cleveland Salon

"This month, the Charles Club and the Cleveland Salon are covering the same issue in two different ways.
First, on Wednesday, July 24, at 7 p.m. at the Happy Dog, the Charles Club will be hosting a debate on whether the death penalty should continue to be used or should be abolished.  The focus is on civil but passionate disagreement, so both sides will be well represented and will address the main arguments for and against capital punishment.  You can view the Facebook invitation here.  The Happy Dog is at 5801 Detroit Ave., Cleveland, OH 44102.
The following Monday, July 29, the Cleveland Salon will be meeting at Mahall’s 20 Lanes to have an open, respectful discussion on the death penalty; it also starts at 7 p.m.  You can view the Facebook invitation here.  Mahall’s is at 13200 Madison Ave.,  Lakewood, OH 44107.
If you have any questions, go ahead and email us.  We hope to see you later this month!"

This is an extremely personal and important topic and should be an interesting discussion at the very least. I would assume that there will be quite a bit of information and opinion to absorb, and I doubt it will be boring at all.

Taste of Tremont - 2013.07.21

There are so many nice neighborhoods around Cleveland that it is hard to filter through all the events constantly going on to pick your traditional favorites.

Taste of Tremont is one of those favorites.

Food? Check (obviously, amiright?). Booze? Check. Czechs? Um, check.

This particular year my favorite rum producers, Portside Distillery, will be making an appearance with their Clydesdale horses at 12 noon.

AND, the heat wave should break so the weather should be GLORIOUS.

Over the past 10 years the Taste of Tremont has quickly become one of Cleveland’s “must attend” events of the summer. We have come to expect over 25,000 visitors, rain or shine, from all over the region. The Taste of Tremont’s visitor profile consistently reflects the demographics of our pre-event media outlets. This means it is a great opportunity for your company to reach this group in a very targeted and relevant way. So, consider supporting this event and enjoy the day in true “Tremont Style.”

This event is FREE to the public.  Beer in the Beer Garden is $5.00 per beer, wine is $4.00 per glass and water is for sale as well ($2.00.)  You pay each food vendor as you go, but admission is FREE!!!

Sculpture Center Opening (with A/C) - 2013.07.19: R. Ferris

TSC logo

THIS FRIDAY, JULY 19 @ 6:30 - 8:00 PM IN THE MAIN GALLERY

GALATEA GLANCE W2S PERFORMANCE BY R FERRIS

R Ferris's Galatea Glance will eliminate the boundaries between a work of art and the viewer to establish viewers' engagement as the work itself. A nude model will portray the Greek Galatea, the ivory statue carved by Pygmalion of Cyprus that was said to spring to life because it was so perfectly modeled.
ATTENTION!! THE PERFORMANCE CONTAINS NUDITY. This event is probably not suitable for most children.
Also enjoy the opening at the Artists Archives of the Western Reserve of Inspired by Nature from 5 - 8 pm

If you haven't already done so, visit W2S artist Gary Blower's Active Vibrations in the Euclid Avenue Gallery and try playing his sculptures. It's more effective the more people are interacting with the pieces at the same time.

Loren Naji Studio Gallery Call 4 Artists and New Exhibition Space

Knock Knock. “Who’s There?” Opportunities. “Opportunities Who?” Opportunities Knock! Loren Naji Studio Gallery makes a Call to Artists and Announces New Exhibition Space!

Member Loren Naji Studio Gallery | Neighborhood Ohio City
Issue Summer 2013 | Author Loren Naji

Loren Naji Studio Gallery offers a shotgun blast of news for the summer, including exhibition space expanding into another room, a planned expansion into another neighborhood, and plenty of opportunity for artists.
First, my familiar main gallery space has expanded into the adjacent, furniture-filled room, which has become “The Lounge Gallery.” Meanwhile, that original gallery will henceforth be called “The Parlor,” unless someone comes up with a better name!
But I have even bigger news. I have been awarded a property, along with two grants in order to create a new one -of -a -kind art venue in Collinwood. I have wild ideas and shows planned, and I even need a live- in curator—not to mention other curators and artists–to help bring these shows and adventures to fruition! Each of the twelve rooms in the new Collinwood venue will feature installations by individual artists. Indeed, every room and surface of the house will be used for exhibition, including the exterior.
In fact, the exterior of this house will literally become a gallery turned inside-out. Using weather resistant paint on panels and repurposed frames, artists will create work to be attached to the facade. This spectacle will allow onlookers to view art from the sidewalk and street! As paintings are sold, they will be replaced by new ones, creating an ever changing, mosaic-like exterior. This striking marvel will create intrigue and draw viewers to enter the space to discover the artist installations.
I need local artists to create works for the exterior, installation artists for the interior and one more special person to live rent free in one room of this gallery and act as gallerist, curator and co-director. Please call me at the gallery, 216.621.6644 for information.
Following are more opportunities associated with upcoming shows:
“Tall Walls, Unjuried, Uncensored” show, a co-production of CWAL and Loren Naji Studio Gallery, opening July 19, 2013. Anyone with art and a $25 dollar entrance fee can participate. Start creating controversial and even offensive art for this extravaganza!
My sister Jamilla Naji, a painter from Albuquerque, will curate a show depicting “the human condition,” with narrative vignettes, opening October 4. Contact my gallery for details.
Skulls, curated by Mary Urbas, opening November 1, 2013. Contact her or myself for inclusion possibilities.
Cleveland Kids Create, curated by my 10 year-old daughter, Brielle Naji, opening December 6, 2013. Featuring work by children between the ages of 5 and 13. Have your kids start creating a piece for this show! All work will be sold for $20.00, providing great holiday gifts and help to a charity for children!
