JUSTIN FARRIS BRAUN: THE SWELLING HORIZON + JIMMY KUEHNLE: INFLATABLE WONDERLAND LABYRINTH OF JOY    Friday, January 18  Opening from 5:30-8:00 pm The Artist Talks: Jimmy Kuehnle at 6:15 in the Euclid Avenue Gallery The Artist Talks: Justin Farris Braun at 7:00 pm in the Main Gallery  Both Justin Farris Braun and Jimmy Kuehnle's installations have a strong physical impact that can leave the viewer surprisingly uncomfortable. Justin Farris Braun's dark work considers the apparently irreversible intersection of nature and the manmade, in both the physical reality of detritus across the American landscape and the overlaps of the patterns of nature and the grids of technology. Jimmy Kuehnle's bright, seemingly circus-like installations, which he makes to move the viewer "out of the humdrum of daily existence," can quickly take on a more personally problematic aspect as the viewer becomes active participant while negotiating his inflated spaces and forms. The exhibitions will be on view through February 23  JUSTIN FARRIS BRAUN: THE SWELLING HORIZON about the artist Braun holds an MFA from Ohio State University and a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art. HIs concept-driven work encompasses drawing, photography, sculpture and installation. With exhibitions nationally and internationally, he has most recently collaborated with landscape architect Sarah Cowles for Artisterium 3 in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia, and produced site specific installations on the north shore of Lake Superior and in Sao Paulo, Brazil.  Image: Justin Braun, they see themselves from the inside, 2012, mixed media installation. Courtesy of the artist.  JIMMY KUEHNLE: INFLATABLE LABYRINTH WONDERLAND OF JOY about the artist Jimmy Kuehnle researched public art and sculpture as a Fulbright Graduate Research Fellow in Japan after completing an MFA at the University of Texas at San Antonio. His recent work features public performance treks through rural and urban cities in the US including Chicago, Detroit, Austin, St. Louis, Cincinnati, San Antonio, Dallas and New York as well as performances in Japan, Italy and Finland. He worked as a resident artist at Sculpture Space in Utica, New York, at Albion College in Albion, Michigan, and Ateljé Stundars in Vaasa, Finland. In 2010, he exhibited in a survey of international artists in residence at the Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro in Milan, Italy. This winter he is working as a SWAP resident at SPACES in Cleveland, Ohio. Teams present concepts for KSU CAED Building - 2013.01.14

The final four shortlisted teams which submitted RFQ's for Kent State University's College of Architecture and Environmental Design will be presenting concepts to the University's selection committee and then make the presentations available to the general public Thursday, January 17, 2013 in Cartwright Hall from 7-9pm.

If you are unable to attend there will be a live streaming.

I won't be able to attend so if someone would be kind enough to post and share images I will promise good vibes or something.

GGS update - "extreme weather caused truck damage"

Greening Gordon Square update:

So Cleveland got some snow.  Not an exceptionally large amount if taken over the proper duration of time, but some white stuff was dumped on us rather quickly. As I was sitting on the train on the way home it dawned on me that the Greening Gordon Square installation was probably in the path of plow trucks, having been installed on a municipal lot and all.

It was.

Not too badly though. There was some minor "reshaping" on the eastern edge of the "garden" but the detention rings were unscathed. Most likely the snowplow operator didn't even feel he hit something.

So this past Saturday I loaded up the XBox with various tools and headed on over to assess the damage. Once all the snow had cleared I could really see that the damage was minimal (above photo). 30 minutes later everything was fixed and the site had been cleaned, ready for the next snow fall and auto impact.

This being the second time that a vehicle had damaged an installation on a parking lot I will admit to being surprised that the GardenSoxx has held up so well. There are a few splits, probably from installation as we were dragging them over the concrete and asphalt, but after meeting a honda and snowplow (that I know of) the Soxx are doing great.

The next batch of soils testing will probably be done in April, just to maximize runoff from snow and rain to see just what is going into our watershed from parking lots. In the meanwhile I am looking for good ways to measure water going through the Soxx and moisture retention (I suppose I could weigh it dry and at saturation and extrapolate based on volume). Also, if anyone has a great resource for tracking historic rainfall data that would be swell!

Inspired Art call for artists

Inspired Art Cleveland

For the Artists

Inspired Art is a collaboration of Cleveland artists and young Cleveland poets. Put on by the local nonprofit America SCORES Cleveland, the event asks local artists to create and donate original works, drawing their inspiration from poems written by Cleveland youth enrolled in SCORES after-school programming. Through this cycle of inspiration and influence, students will witness their creativity brought to life, artists will connect with their community and SCORES’ supporters will see the profound impact these children’s words can have on others.

We are looking for artists of all mediums to participate in this cycle of inspiration. Artists are asked to choose one poem from the Student Poetry Collection available on the Inspired Art Project website and then create and donate an original work (or submit a previously completed piece) inspired by this poem.

The artwork will be displayed alongside the original poem and sold at a benefit silent auction on June 22, 2013 at at smARTspace at 78th, 1305 W. 80th Street, Suite 1 on Cleveland’s west side. Proceeds will benefit SCORES’ work in providing creative programming to Cleveland youth.

Artist registration deadline is February 15, 2013. Download the Artist registration form here.

Interested artists should also submit at least three (3) digital photographs of your work or a hyperlink to your online portfolio to Alissa O’Neill by February 15, 2013 at aoneill@americascores.org . All accepted artists will also be eligible to enter artwork into the Cover Design Contest; winning artwork will be featured on event marketing collateral and the benefit program cover.

CPAC will kick off our 2013 Arts and Culture Roundtable series with a focus on sustainability. On January 25, Hunter Morisson will join the arts and culture community to present and discuss information about the Northeast Ohio Sustainable Communities Consortium Initiative (NEOSCC). We'll discuss how the arts and culture community can engage with the effort for Northeast Ohio's sustainable future.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and we will begin promply at 8:30.

Hunter Morrison: Before acting as Director of the NEOSCC, Hunter worked as the Director of the Center for Urban Regional Studies at Youngstown State University. The Center was established for the purpose of understanding applied research addressing issues of urban and regional development and providing technical assistance to local government, social service organizations and businesses. Prior to this he was Director of the Cleveland City Planning Commission and was responsible for Civic Vision 2000, a $3 million initiative that resulted in the comprehensive updating of the City's Downtown Plan, Citywide Plan and Zoning Code.

I ran across this today at lunch time (I swear!) and figured I would share it. While limited to some of the most popular works by the most popular architects it is quite an impressive array that blends examples well (the video is quite nicely done) but also is an interesting take on finding elevation form parti's, something that some students have difficulty with as they overcomplicate the effort (everything is supposed to be hard, right?

Sort of my feel good post for the day. I hope it brought some sunshine to your deskbound activities.

On Friday, January 18, 2013 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm The Shaker Historical Society (SHS), 16740 South Park Blvd. in Shaker Heights, OH invites you to join friends and artists for an opening reception featuring prints from Cleveland’s award winning Zygote Press, Inc., in the Jack and Linda Lissauer Gallery. The exhibition will run from Tuesday, January 15th thru Sunday, March 20th 2013.

The Zygote Press developed this traveling exhibition, known as the Printmaking Exhibition Project, to make contemporary printmaking more accessible to the broader community. The exhibition features many individual works offering a different technical approach to the printmaking medium. The works in the exhibit were selected by four distinguished curators: William Busta, William Martin Jean, Bellamy Printz and Lisa Schonberg. The mission of Zygote Press Inc. is to enable artists to produce fine art prints within an atmosphere of collective exchange by providing them with affordable work space and exhibition opportunities. ZPI is a resource dedicated to increasing awareness about contemporary printmaking by creating active communication among artist-printmakers and the broader community. ZPI was the recipient of the 2012 Cleveland Arts Prize, the Martha Joseph Prize for Distinguished Service to the Arts.

Don Hisaka: The Cleveland Years

On Friday, January 18, 2013 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm The Shaker Historical Society (SHS), 16740 South Park Blvd. in Shaker Heights, invites you to join us for an exciting opening reception featuring the history and pivotal work of Don Hisaka, architect of many major buildings from Cleveland and Northeast Ohio to Tokyo. Compositions include residences, educational structures and commercial spaces. The exhibition will run from Tuesday, January 15th thru Sunday, March 20th 2013.

Don Hisaka was born in Stockton, California and earned his Bachelor’s degree in architecture at the University of California at Berkeley and a Master’s of Architecture at Harvard University. Beginning in 1960 when he opened his practice in Cleveland, he designed noteworthy buildings such as, Beachwood’s Signature Square office complex (1986-9), the glass atrium connecting Thwing and Hitchcock Halls at CASE Western Reserve University (1980) and University Center at Cleveland State University (1974) with characteristic attention paid to the surroundings and their relationship to the building. In 1970, Hisaka was awarded the prestigious Cleveland Arts Prize in Architecture.

On Sunday, January 27th 2013 at 3:00 pm James D. Gibans, FAIA Emeritus, will speak about the local homes designed by Don Hisaka for illustrious clients such as, Agnes Gund and Anita and Delos (Toby) Cosgrove, CEO, Cleveland Clinic. Mr. Gibans will spotlight Hisaka’s design of a very contemporary home in Shaker Heights known for its stately brick Georgians and Tudor mansions. Mr. Hisaka is the only Cleveland architect to win a prestigious national Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects. Mr. Gibans co-curated the 2011 exhibit of Don’s work for the Cleveland Artists Foundation, had the privilege of working as an Associate in Don’s office in the mid-70s, and for over 20 years was a principal in the Cleveland firm currently known as Herman Gibans Fodor, Inc. Reservations requested.
