Wall Eye Gallery bike-art show to benefit OCBC

This Friday, May 20 from 6 - 11pm we hope you'll join us for the opening reception of Pedaling Art, a juried show of more than 100 works of bike-themed art to mark Cleveland Bicycle Week, and benefit the OCBC's educational mission.

Wall Eye Gallery, at 5304 Detroit Ave, is a very cool, co-operatively owned venture located in the up-and-coming Gordon Square district.

The event is free, and open to the public. We'll be valet parking bikes all night, and staffing a table to present info about OCBC membership, and our own bike part arts and crafts for sale.

Burning the Midnight Oil - Cheerio Exterior Installation

A while back a friend who ran an office in LA moved back to Cleveland to finish up a local project, the rehab of a mixed use structure on the West End of the Cleveland neighborhood known as the Detroit Shoreway Neighborhood (which has recently undergone some major rehabilitation). Adam (my buddy) asked if I would be interested in helping him "do something" with the building (known as the Cheerio Building) as the residential units are reaching completion and the commercial units are still rather raw.

Regardless to say (and I won't bother with the minutia just yet) the storefront installation (Or installation 1 of 2-oh my god time is flying too fast) is 60% done and up for the world to see. With this in mind I figured I may as well put the word out before massive rumors of an urban animal menagerie got too far out of hand.

The exterior installation is simply an attempt to make the construction barricade/boardup palatable to the community. We put some CDX on 2x framing, spray painted a graphic (morse code for you math nerds), perforated the plywood (to play with back lighting) and began putting the larger graphics up as well. There is still more to do, including installing the panels on the other storefronts and finishing the stencil work.

And this is the exterior installation, one is in the works for the interior when the building is "opened" for an exhibition.

As the whole thing comes together, more explanation, written in archi-prose completely self referential and ironic (so no one can understand it) will be offered. In the mean time just enjoy the giant pink rhino that now graces Detroit Ave. in Cleveland. (insert rhino noise here)

The Sculpture Center is focused this year on the many exceptional artists at our larger region's institutions of higher learning, art schools, colleges, or universities. Our summer exhibitionSculptureX: 6 Sculptors from Ohio and Western Pennsylvania was curated by David Carrier from submissions from 35 schools in that area and is part of the SculptureX.org website, created by Edinboro University of Pennsylvania to serve as a collaborative professional exchange and marketing tool for all schools that want to participate. To launch these endeavors we held the well attended and highly successful SculptureX Symposium #1: The State of Sculpture at the Cleveland Institute of Art in November 2010.

Continuing with this theme of exchange and promotion, The Sculpture Center's call for artists for the annual juried After the Pedestal is being restricted, this one time only, to all current MFA students and 2009 -2011 MFA graduates from studio art programs in Ohio, its contiguous states (Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania) and Ontario, Canada. The artists can be working in all media of sculpture, including installation, conceptual work, and performance video if object based, are eligible. Barbara Hunt McLanahan, Executive Director of the Judd Foundation, is the juror for After the Pedestal. The exhibition will tie in withSculptureX Symposium #2: The State of the MFA, again being held at the Cleveland Institute of Art, on October 15, 2011, free and open to the public.

We are pleased to announce the 2011 Cleveland Design Competition: A NEW School Vision is now Open for Registration!!!

The 2011 Cleveland Design Competition invites professionals, students, firms and designers from all over the world to submit extraordinary visions for a new K - 12 public school in Downtown Cleveland. At a time when educators are implementing dramatically new ideas in pedagogy, curricula and organization models, the reinvention of learning environments deserves equal attention. The 2011 Cleveland Design Competition presents an opportunity to re-imagine the school and explore how educational facilities must evolve to provide world-class opportunities for learning.

The challenges that education and educational facilities are currently experiencing are not unique to the City of Cleveland. Many cities throughout the world are faced with a growing achievment gap between high performing and poor performing schools. Families from communities with poor performing schools who seek to improve the educational opportunities for their children have little choice but to move to communities where the school districts are better funded, operated and offer more opportunities for academic success. The 2011 Cleveland Design Competition invites designers to re-evaluate prescribed formulas for school planning and design and offer new approaches that support new educational philosophies that will influence better learning environments in the City of Cleveland and around the world.

For 2011, the Cleveland Design Competition has partnered with the Cleveland Metroplitan School District (CMSD) and Cleveland State University (CSU) to solicit ideas for a new innovative school for Campus International School (CIS) in Downtown Cleveland. While Cleveland Design Competition is an ideas-based, single stage competition, our CMSD and CSU competition partners have contributed invaluable information and support developing the competition challenge over the past year. Their involvement has been critical to developing the competition brief as well as selecting a great site that CSU is currently recommending as the future home for the Campus International School. All three partners (CSU, CMSD, CIS) are very excited to see the results!

At the conclusion of the 2011 Cleveland Design Competition, a jury of nationally renowned experts will select submissions to receive the following prizes:

First Place: $5,000.00 USD

Second Place: $2,000.00 USD

Third Place: $1,000.00 USD

Please join us as Ohio Canal Corridor celebrates 22 years of Ohio’s largest done-in-a-day cleanup effort. Over the course of our 22+ years, we have recruited local businesses, corporations, and even individuals for contributions and volunteer teams to support this cause. This year the event will be held on Saturday, May 7th from 9 am until noon- volunteers receive gloves and bags. First 1,000 volunteers to sign up will receive a commemorative Buddha Frog t-shirt designed by George Cogill. Don’t forget to join us at the luncheon after the event from noon to 2 pm at the Rivergate Room located in the Power House on the West Bank of the Flats. As the weather finally warms up to tolerable temperatures it's time to take the winter cycling clothes and pack them away, tune up the bike for spring, check your fenders (it's the rainy season in most locales) and celebrate National Bike Month by riding safe and often.

With My Own Two Wheels - documentary

Century Cycles is proud to be one of the community sponsors of a benefit for World Bicycle Relief that will feature the Cleveland premiere of an award-winning documentary film, With My Own Two Wheels, on Tuesday, May 3, at 7 p.m. at the Cedar Lee Theatre (2163 Lee Road in Cleveland Heights).

Filmmaker Jacob Seigel-Bottner will attend the benefit screening to introduce the film and lead a post-show discussion. The documentary weaves together the experiences of five individuals -- from California, Zambia, India, Ghana and Guatemala -- into a single story about how bicycles can change the world, one pedal stroke at a time.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students/seniors. The benefit will include a raffle to which Century Cycles and other local sponsors have donated prizes, and those tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. All proceeds benefit World Bicycle Relief, which is an organization that provides access to independence, health care, education and livelihood through the power of bicycles.

The Cleveland Stories exhibition features historic fragments, semi-fictional narratives, and outright fabrications about Cleveland. These stories provide the raw material for new ways of understanding and intervening in the city.

Cleveland Stories is a reminder that we write and (re)write the history of Cleveland every day. We invite you to be part of this work. Do you have a Cleveland Story to tell? You can add your drawings, text, or diorama to the show throughout the month of April. Then in the following months, we will be bringing some of these stories to life through installations in city neighborhoods. Unintended Consequences - Camera Obscura

This Saturday I was perusing the site of an installation (pre-installation of course) with Adam Rosekelly of f i e l d s. We were exploring some smaller commercial bays of a building currently under renovation when we stumbled upon the following in the last bay. The image was created by a suspended plastic sheet about 15' from the boarded up storefront.

(the lower image was created by adjusting the f-stop on the camera, it was much darker inside than shown)

It took a while to figure out what we were looking at but when we realized that the movement at the top of the plastic sheet was passing cars it dawned on us that a small knothole in the sheathing was creating the effect of a camera obscura. For clarity I have rotated the image (see below).

...and adjusted the f-stop a touch more (after stacking some things to hold the camera steady) which allows one to really pick out the shapes and colors. I obviously couldn't catch any of the cars on "film" since the exposure was set so long. However you could see the projection of the cars on the walls before and after they "drove" across the plastic.

We spent quite a bit of time watching the effect. I don't know if this is interesting to anyone else but the awe of discovering something like this was really exciting to me.

Join us for PechaKucha Night Cleveland - Volume 12 at the top of the Higbee's Building; the 10-story eastern wing of the Terminal Tower complex that sits right on Public Square. On Friday, April 8th, 2011, at 8:20pm, with your attendance, we will bringing back Higbee's for a night of PechaKucha as we head to the 10th floor to activate the currently vacant auditorium space. To our knowledge, this space has only been used 2 times since the closing of Higbee's, and this will be the first it is open to the public!

To get into the space you MUST enter off Prospect Avenue in entrance a few doors east (toward Ontario, away from Warehouse District) of the entrance to Tower 230 Bar and Grille. Entrance will have PechaKucha Night poster on it!

For Volume 12 we've got a few artists, an architect, a fashion and technology designer, an urban designer, a motorcycle designer, a group of friends telling the story of how shots have shaped their lives, a photographer, a sculptor and a graphic designer. These 10-12 creatives will present their work, ideas, and obsessions in a series of 400 second long presentations; each person showing 20 images of their work that have been pre-timed to 20 seconds per image.

As many remember, the Volume 11 audience maxed out the House of Blues Cambridge Room and had to turn people away because of room capacity issues. For Volume 12, we've doubled our capacity limit by the venue selection, but HIGHLY recommend you show up early so that you do not get left out in the cold!:)

The doors and the bars open at 7:00pm and the presentations, as always, begin at 8:20pm.
