Holiday Bike to Work Day:

Celebration of the Hope Memorial Bikeway Opening (facespace page)

Help ring in the opening of the Hope Memorial Bikeway (the bike path on the Lorain Carnegie Bridge) this holiday season on Monday, December 10th from 7am to 8:30am for the Holiday Bike to Work Day Celebration. Stop by on your way to work, school, or just on your early morning ride.

In celebration Bike Cleveland and the Cleveland Bike Rack will be providing hot coffee and pastries to cyclists and pedestrians who cross over the bridge. We will be set up in the new promenade on the east side of the Hope Memor

ial/Lorain Carnegie bridge (across from Progressive Field). This is your chance to be one of the first to ride over the Hope Memorial Bikeway, which officially opens that morning. 

The Cleveland Bike Rack will have information on the Bike Station including their winter commuter parking services, ODOT will have information on the bikeway and enhancements that will be made in 2013, and of course Bike Cleveland will be there with membership info and t-shirts (this is a good opportunity to get a Bike Cleveland shirt for that special cyclists in your life for the holiday). 

We know it’s short notice so if you can't make it on December 10th, be sure to check out the Hope Memorial Bikeway next time you are headed east-west. We will also be planning a larger event in the spring to celebrate the lighting of the Guardians and other improvements along the bikeway.

Thanks to Councilman Joe Cimperman for helping provide the coffee (from Phoenix Coffe) and breakfast pastries (from BonBon Pastry and Cafe).

I have been watching the progress on the bridge for the past few (six?) months as I sometimes take that way to work (and also to drive by and see the bookbox) and have been getting more and more excited about how the bridge pedestrian + bikeway with the addition of the work at Ontario and Carnegie might just very well be a huge missing ling to connecting Ohio City back to downtown Cleveland.  (especially with the new signaled crossing on Ontario by Progressive Field (I typed Jacobs first, oops).

It is doubtful that I will ever be able to bike comfortably from Lakewood to Shaker Square (work), but I look forward to more cycling around and into Cleveland, east of the river is a place I rarely cycle. I am hoping to use the heck out of the new bikeway next year.

Public Square Events

• This year, Public Square will be packed with concerts and activities for the whole family leading up to the lighting ceremony. The fun kicks off on the Square at 1:00PM.
  Activities include:
  5:30a.m.-5:30p.m. GE Bike-A-Thon Powers Lights on City's Holiday Tree
  GE will be holding a bike-a-thon on the SW Quadrant of Public Square. A platform will be set up in front of the Public Square fountain with stationary bikes set up. GE Employees and MC2STEM Students will pedal to kinetically power batteries which power the tree. This will generate 2300 watts of power (the wattage of LED lights, ornaments and tree topper on the tree) to power the Public Square Christmas Tree for 100 minutes. If we were powering an incandescent tree of the same size, we'd need 35,600 watts of power or ride for 188.4 hours!
  12:00p.m. In partnership with WEWS TV5, watch OSU vs Michigan football game on the 14'w x 11'tall big screen in the middle of Public Square
  1:00-5:00p.m. Enjoy free horse drawn carriage rides throughout Downtown Cleveland. Carriage rides begin at Superior Avenue and East Roadway, on Public Square (near Old Stone Church)

Kent State Names 4 Architecture teams as

Finalists for New Building

The selection process for an architect for the new CAED building is now on the road to the final four!  From the original 37 teams the process has been thorough with over 7400 pages of material reviewed in order to move to eight semi-finalist interviewees.  Four of these eight have been chosen to proceed to the competition phase of the process.  They are:  

Bialosky + Partners Architects, LLC with Architecture Research Office

Richard L. Bowen + Associates, Inc. with Weiss/Manfredi

The Collaborative, Inc in association with Miller Hull Partnership, LLC

Westlake Reed Leskosky, Ltd

 

Each of the four teams will prepare a concept that incorporates function/image, sustainable synthesis and detailed cost data.  After having some interaction with the College of Architecture and Environmental Design, they will present how they would involve faculty, staff and students in their design process.   

Teams will present their ideas to the selection committee Thursday, January 17, 2013.  That evening they will introduce their schemes to the Kent State Community in Cartwright Hall between 7:00 and 9:00 PM.  Mark your calendars as this will be open to the public.  Materials will then be displayed in the Library for a period of time with feedback opportunities.  

-January 17th will be the big unveil of what is probably one of the most eagerly hoped for commissions in Northeast Ohio, the design of what Kent State University promises to be a signature (of sorts) new building for the College of Architecture and Environmental Design. The pressure is on, for many of the local firms are heavily staffed with graduates of the program who hope to prove to the public the abilities their Alma mater have granted them as well as finally providing a functional, useful and less horrible study environment for all the future students of the KSU CAED program.

I admit I am looking forward to seeing the proposals, but am equally fearful.  I hope the building is more "studio" then "iconic".  A good studio space will be useful as long as cooperative and collaborative group learning is taking place.  An iconic building can look dated surprisingly quickly.

Post Election 2012 - dealing with the detritus - political sign competition

Usually the emails from Carl Skalak of Blue Pike Farm are a joy to read and today's was no exception.  In a nutshell, Blue Pike Farms is offering a Political Sign buy-back program.  They don't care who they are for or how busted they are.  

Bring in 50 or more candidate or issue signs and receive 1/2 dozen of Henrietta's favorite Blue Pike Farm free range non-GMO eggs.

Photo taken around 7.15am walking back from my polling place after successfully making my mark for my guy.  Fingers crossed we can put an end to all this nonsense for a while.  At least 2 and a half years before we have to deal with this again.  Please.

Now lets get back to the important stuff, like making this city awesome again.  Or more awesome.  Whatever.

November 6th, 2012 INCOMING - go vote

In a bit over 24 hours (if you are from the United States) you will have your last chance to affect the various local, regional and national elections of this year.  As the USA attempts to claw it's way out of economic distress and re-evaluate it's purpose on the international stage we all face tough decisions.  Decisions we should not take lightly for our ability to make these decisions were hard fought for and rigorously defended.  As a citizen of the USA I take election day extremely personally.  I find it my honor and duty to research the candidates and issues being brought forth to the best of my ability, culling data from multiple sources, to form what I consider the best opinion that I can reasonably make. With those decisions in hand I find my way to the polling station and make what little mark I can on the direction I believe we need to go in, together.

I am not going to endorse an idea or candidate here.  Instead I am just reminding you that even if you don't believe it matters, even if you don't think you make a difference, you have a responsibility to make yourself heard.  You may not think you are informed enough, or savvy enough, or even important enough to make decisions for others, but that isn't what the elections are about.  They are about giving everyone in our society, those who work or benefit from or both, the ability to take ownership in our nation by directing the policies we all will abide by.

So, this November 6th, if you haven't already, go vote.  I look forward in waiting in line with you.  We can talk about how disappointing the Cleveland Browns are (no biggie, I'm used to it) or how Hurricane Sandy kicked our butts or even what your favorite doughnut place is.  What I will not talk to you about however, is how little voting matters, or how rigged the system is, etc. Talking does very little, action accomplishes things.

Take action.  Go vote.  It is a little bit of your duty as a citizen.

Enhance Clifton upcoming public meetings!

In what could be one of the largest west side infrastructure projects (at least in connecting major residential areas to Lake Erie and dealing with the 7 lane mega misnomer road, Clifton Boulevard) and a project I personally really hope to succeed, there are two upcoming public meetings scheduled.  Take note below.

Over the past year and a half, since 2010, the Enhance Clifton program has been changed in several areas. A revised project schedule can be viewed here. The RTA has now secured a significant amount of construction funding to move the project forward. The architectural and engineering firm of Richard L. Bowen + Associates Inc., that was selected by a joint panel in 2009, is continuing its efforts and has been working to prepare the 60% Design Development Submittal.

Two public meetings have been scheduled to inform residents in Cleveland and Lakewood of the updated project scope and to receive feedback before final construction documents are created.

A summary of the current scope of the project is as follows:

Cleveland:  

• The roadway will be widened by one-foot in both directions.
• The driveway aprons along the Boulevard will be re-built, due to the widening.
• The new permanent bus stations will be constructed at the previously determined locations.
• The entire roadway will be repaved.
• The medians will be constructed with trees and landscaping.
• The area around W. 115th and W. 117th will have some additional streetscape enhancements, including masonry planters and sidewalk pavers.
• The span-wire traffic signals from W. 115th to Baltic will be replaced with mast arms including transit priority.

 

Lakewood: 

• The new permanent stations will still be constructed at the previously determined locations.
• Each new station will also have a new concrete bus pad within the curb lane.
• The curb lane will recieve new signage and pavement markings to designate when the lanes are bus-only.
• No other construction work within the City of Lakewood will occur.

YOU ARE INVITED TO THE OPENING OF  ALI MOMENI'S MOST RECENT SOUND AND LIGHT INSTALLATION ANIMAL WARMTH (60S EDITION) ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9  5:30 - 8:00 pm Free Public Opening 7:00 pm            The Artist Talks: Ali Momeni in the Main Gallery  also on view  Procession: Song for the Underground Railroad  an installation by Johnny Coleman in the Euclid Avenue and The Platform Galleries       Ali Momeni, self described "builder, composer, and performer," has been creating Animal Warmth, a serial artwork with arrangements of carbon filament light bulbs and computer generated sound, for several years. With only timed movements of light and sound emanating from the bulbs the artist transforms manufactured, non-living objects into lively, space animating, and audience pleasing beings. Videos of Animal Warmth (#28) (2008) at the Almost Cinema Festival of 2008 at Vooruit in Gent, Belgium can be seen by right clicking on the image below. about the artist  Ali Momeni is a builder, composer, and performer interested in the poetics of gesture, effect, and timing. His work makes use of all manners of technology to explore the social lives of objects and their embedded performative qualities. His creative output ranges from kinetic sculptures and sound installations, to urban interventions and music theater performance. Momeni was born in Isfahan, Iran, and emigrated to the United States at the age of twelve. He studied physics and music at Swarthmore College, completing his doctoral degree in music composition, improvisation, and performance with computers from the Center for New Music and Audio Technologies at UC Berkeley. He spent three years in Paris where he collaborated with performers and researchers from La Kitchen, IRCAM, Sony CSL and CIRM.  Between 2007 and 2011, Momeni was an assistant professorship in the Department of Art at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where he directed theSpark Festival of Electronic Music and Art, and founded the urban projection collective called the MAW. Momeni currently teaches in the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University and oversees CMU ArtFab. In spring 2013, The Sculpture Center will be showing Ali Momeni and collaborator Robin Meier's The Tragedy of the Commons, an exhibition with Atta ants.

Due to the storm funtimes the region is currently undergoing the Panel at Westlake Library is being cancelled tonight (Tuesday, October 30th, 2012).

Hopefully it will be rescheduled for early December.

2012 Lakewood LEAF Night Harvest Festival - Tonight!

Pie Bake-Off

Break out your best pie recipe enter into our annual Pie Bake-Off! All pies should be dropped off at Harvest Festival no later than 5:30pm along with a list of ingredients. Returning Celebrity Judges from WRUW's Maximum Consumptionwill then select winners for the following categories: best crust, most original, best taste overall and best use of vegetables in a pie.

Pumpkin Carving Contest

Bring a carved and scraped-out pumpkin or other gourd with your name clearly marked to the contest table by 5:30pm. This year's contest will include prizes for Most Original, Scariest, Happiest, LEAF-iest and Most Impressive.

Activities for the Whole Family

Hula Hoop Making

Learn how to make your own hula hoop with LEAF's own hula expert from basic home materials. Then take one home with you! All proceeds from the hula hoops will go towards supporting LEAF's local food programming.

Kids Coloring Contest

Draw your favorite part of LEAF Night or color one of LEAF's local food themed coloring pages at the festival for a chance to be published in the Lakewood Observer and displayed on LEAF's website.

The Bulk Table will have a lot of grain and produce items for LEAF Nighttonight! They are available for purchase now and Adrienne will be taking special orders in a few weeks.  Some of the items she has are: honey puffed spelt cereal, puffed spelt, rolled oats, flax seeds, various beans, popcorn, brown rice, and pink Himalayan salt.

LEAF provides a space for CSA members and home gardeners a place to bring local unwanted produce and swap it for something you need. This is a great place for people who are overwhelmed with their home or community garden harvest. Items on the table at the end of the nightare donated to a local food bank or community meal.

2012 Competition Exhibition and Awards Reception - Next Friday!

All are invited to the free, public Awards Reception and Exhibition where 164 competition submissions from 24 countries around the world will be on display!  After a short happy hour and exhibition viewing, Armando Carbonell, Senior Fellow of the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy will announce the winners of this year's Design Competition. The Awards Reception and Exhibition will be taking place inside the catacombs of the Detroit Superior Bridge.

On October 19th, the 2012 Jury met in Cleveland to review the submissions (check out the jury by CLICKING HERE) and select this years winners. We hope to see you next Friday, October 26th, as we celebrate the 5th year of the Cleveland Design Competition! Beverages (cash bar) and light hors d'oeuvres will be provided.
