Enhance Clifton upcoming public meetings!

In what could be one of the largest west side infrastructure projects (at least in connecting major residential areas to Lake Erie and dealing with the 7 lane mega misnomer road, Clifton Boulevard) and a project I personally really hope to succeed, there are two upcoming public meetings scheduled.  Take note below.

Over the past year and a half, since 2010, the Enhance Clifton program has been changed in several areas. A revised project schedule can be viewed here. The RTA has now secured a significant amount of construction funding to move the project forward. The architectural and engineering firm of Richard L. Bowen + Associates Inc., that was selected by a joint panel in 2009, is continuing its efforts and has been working to prepare the 60% Design Development Submittal.

Two public meetings have been scheduled to inform residents in Cleveland and Lakewood of the updated project scope and to receive feedback before final construction documents are created.

A summary of the current scope of the project is as follows:

Cleveland:  

• The roadway will be widened by one-foot in both directions.
• The driveway aprons along the Boulevard will be re-built, due to the widening.
• The new permanent bus stations will be constructed at the previously determined locations.
• The entire roadway will be repaved.
• The medians will be constructed with trees and landscaping.
• The area around W. 115th and W. 117th will have some additional streetscape enhancements, including masonry planters and sidewalk pavers.
• The span-wire traffic signals from W. 115th to Baltic will be replaced with mast arms including transit priority.

 

Lakewood: 

• The new permanent stations will still be constructed at the previously determined locations.
• Each new station will also have a new concrete bus pad within the curb lane.
• The curb lane will recieve new signage and pavement markings to designate when the lanes are bus-only.
• No other construction work within the City of Lakewood will occur.

YOU ARE INVITED TO THE OPENING OF  ALI MOMENI'S MOST RECENT SOUND AND LIGHT INSTALLATION ANIMAL WARMTH (60S EDITION) ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9  5:30 - 8:00 pm Free Public Opening 7:00 pm            The Artist Talks: Ali Momeni in the Main Gallery  also on view  Procession: Song for the Underground Railroad  an installation by Johnny Coleman in the Euclid Avenue and The Platform Galleries       Ali Momeni, self described "builder, composer, and performer," has been creating Animal Warmth, a serial artwork with arrangements of carbon filament light bulbs and computer generated sound, for several years. With only timed movements of light and sound emanating from the bulbs the artist transforms manufactured, non-living objects into lively, space animating, and audience pleasing beings. Videos of Animal Warmth (#28) (2008) at the Almost Cinema Festival of 2008 at Vooruit in Gent, Belgium can be seen by right clicking on the image below. about the artist  Ali Momeni is a builder, composer, and performer interested in the poetics of gesture, effect, and timing. His work makes use of all manners of technology to explore the social lives of objects and their embedded performative qualities. His creative output ranges from kinetic sculptures and sound installations, to urban interventions and music theater performance. Momeni was born in Isfahan, Iran, and emigrated to the United States at the age of twelve. He studied physics and music at Swarthmore College, completing his doctoral degree in music composition, improvisation, and performance with computers from the Center for New Music and Audio Technologies at UC Berkeley. He spent three years in Paris where he collaborated with performers and researchers from La Kitchen, IRCAM, Sony CSL and CIRM.  Between 2007 and 2011, Momeni was an assistant professorship in the Department of Art at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where he directed theSpark Festival of Electronic Music and Art, and founded the urban projection collective called the MAW. Momeni currently teaches in the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University and oversees CMU ArtFab. In spring 2013, The Sculpture Center will be showing Ali Momeni and collaborator Robin Meier's The Tragedy of the Commons, an exhibition with Atta ants.

Due to the storm funtimes the region is currently undergoing the Panel at Westlake Library is being cancelled tonight (Tuesday, October 30th, 2012).

Hopefully it will be rescheduled for early December.

Bring a carved and scraped-out pumpkin or other gourd with your name clearly marked to the contest table by 5:30pm. This year's contest will include prizes for Most Original, Scariest, Happiest, LEAF-iest and Most Impressive.

All are invited to the free, public Awards Reception and Exhibition where 164 competition submissions from 24 countries around the world will be on display!  After a short happy hour and exhibition viewing, Armando Carbonell, Senior Fellow of the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy will announce the winners of this year's Design Competition. The Awards Reception and Exhibition will be taking place inside the catacombs of the Detroit Superior Bridge.

On October 19th, the 2012 Jury met in Cleveland to review the submissions (check out the jury by CLICKING HERE) and select this years winners. We hope to see you next Friday, October 26th, as we celebrate the 5th year of the Cleveland Design Competition! Beverages (cash bar) and light hors d'oeuvres will be provided.

Sponsored by AIA Cleveland, Architects Draw is an exhibition concept conceived from Peter's appreciation for what may seem natural but in today's age and fixation with all things digital, is not.  Peter reminds us that you won't find the soul of architecture in your desktop.  Great architecture can only derive from a uniquely human collaboration between the mind, the eyes and the hand.   Peter, who spent a year in Rome on a Fulbright fellowship, will be featured as a special guest artist and will showcase his personal travel sketches from over the years. The juried exhibition will include recent works in a variety of disciplines by Architects and students of Architecture.  

  

Architects, intern architects, associates and architecture students were invited to submit travel sketches, paintings, watercolors, and similar works of art outside the normal business of architecture. AIA Cleveland President Kurt Weaver admitted "We had no idea what to expect, by all accounts submissions exceeded the expectations of this first ever exhibit concept for AIA Cleveland."  It then became the difficult job of a distinguished panel of jurors to evaluate and determine the finalists of the show.  The jurors included Artist, Cathie Bleck, CIA President, Grafton Nunes, Artist, Christopher Pekoc, Artist, Antonia Reiner and Artist and Art Critic, Douglas Max Utter.

The exhibit will be on display from Friday, November 2nd through December 2nd, 2012. Exhibit viewing hours are Monday and Wednesday from 6:00pm-8:00pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am-2:00pm.

THE SCULPTURE CENTER IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT W2S, ITS KEYSTONE EXHIBITION SERIES, IS NOW OPEN TO EARLY CAREER ARTISTS OF OHIO AND OUR ENTIRE REGION. THE REGION  Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, western Pennsylvania (the western half of the state), western New York (Rochester and west), or Ontario, Canada. THE EARLY CAREER ARTIST The sculptor, installation artist, or expanded media artist must have a connection to the region by birth, residency, or schooling, but does not need to be currently residing in the region. By the application deadline (January 2013), the sculptor must have completed his/her schooling, apprenticeship, or period of equivalent self-taught experience and be no more than ten years into h/her career. Building with nature: A symposium to explore the frontiers of green building, biomimicry and architecture  9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on October 18, 2012, at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History The Cleveland Museum of Natural History is planning to redevelop its campus in University Circle. One of the goals is to create a building that embodies the Museum's mission of inspiring a passion for nature, protecting natural diversity, fostering health and providing leadership to a sustainable future. To explore the latest thinking, the Museum is hosting a public symposium about the integration of buildings and nature. Following the educational success of the Museum's PNC SmartHome exhibit in 2011, the symposium will stimulate ideas about the potential for new kinds of buildings in Northeast Ohio—radically better buildings that respond to human needs while restoring the Earth's natural systems. The discipline once known as sculpture is no longer bound to serve as a producer of architectural elements, nor is it any longer contained by the historical narratives that once determined its form. Sculpture as a contemporary practice is a condition of space - it is interactive and participatory and relationally claims no singular territory. Multidimensional in nature, sculpture in its most expanded form generates a nexus where narratives, materiality, and medium unfold, refold, and co-mingle in an indeterminate social and cultural arena. about the artist Mel Chin

Mel Chin was born in Houston, Texas in 1951. Chin's art, which is both analytical and poetic, evades easy classification. He is known for the broad range of approaches in his art, including works that require multi-disciplinary, collaborative teamwork and works that conjoin cross-cultural aesthetics with complex ideas. Chin also insinuates art into unlikely places, including destroyed homes, toxic landfills, and even popular television, investigating how art can provoke greater social awareness and responsibility. His projects are consistent with a conceptual philosophy, which emphasizes the practice of art to include sculpting and bridging natural and social ecology. Chin's work was documented in the popular PBS program, Art of the 21st Century, and he has received numerous awards and grants. About the Competition

Program DescriptionSee Also is an annual program of the Cleveland Public Library in partnership with LAND studio that invites artists, designers, and other creative professionals to create temporary public art projects in the library’s Eastman Reading Garden. The program commissions innovative, thought-provoking works of art that add to the library’s already broad range of educational and cultural programming. Each year, one artist or team of artists is selected to exhibit an artwork from May until October in this highly visible and beloved space. The Eastman Reading Garden is located in the heart of downtown Cleveland between the library’s historic Main Building and the newer Louis Stokes Wing of the Cleveland Public Library.

2013 ThemeThroughout Cleveland’s history, people have dreamed big, offering unique depictions of what a cityscape could contain. This ambitious visioning has produced a range of concepts, big and small, fantastic and far-fetched, that could redefine Cleveland’s landscape. From attaching ferris wheels to bridges to erecting a giant Superman across the Cuyahoga, Clevelanders have long conveyed fearlessness and creativity in their dreams. 

For the 2013 See Also installation, we are asking artists to think BIG. In the spirit of thinking big for our city, Cleveland Public Library and LAND studio challenge artists to design thoughtful, wacky, novel or whimsical concepts for a jury of local stakeholders to consider for installation in the Eastman Reading Garden. Artists are encouraged to develop concepts that deal with the garden space specifically, or present ideas for sites throughout the city at the scale of the garden. 

One or more artists will be selected to create an installation for the garden that showcases their big dreams for a small space.

Eligibility

See Also is open to established and emerging artists from the Great Lakes Region (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Ontario). Artists may work individually or as part of a team.

Awards

PrizesBased on overall concept and project feasibility, one grand prize winner will be awarded $1,000. First and second runners-up will each be awarded $500.

Budget

The chosen artist(s) will be commissioned to develop his or her proposal to be installed in the Eastman Reading Garden in May 2013. The budget for the artwork is $15,000. An additional $3,000 is available for artist(s) fees. Please note that the jury reserves the right to divide the artist fee and artwork budget among multiple winning artists. The artwork budget must cover all project-related costs including but not limited to materials, fabrication, transportation, insurance, and installation.

Registration Deadline - TODAY Just a quick reminder that TODAY is the last day you can register for the 2012 Cleveland Design Competition: Transforming the Bridge!   Further instructions related to submitting an entry can be found below and should help clarify any confusion one might have about where to find ALL of the information needed to submit an entry.   Please keep in mind that you MUST Sign Up for Digital Submission if you plan on uploading your submission to the Cleveland Design Competition in lieu of printing and mailing the entry yourself. Submissions post-marked before the deadline which arrive after the deadline will be subject to disqualification.
